Mikono (Kiswahili for "hands") is a craft shop in Nairobi where 70 refugees from different countries sell their products. Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) opened the shop in 1993 to help refugees in the city become self-reliant by marketing their products. Over the years, many refugees have been able to meet their daily needs with the income earned through the shop. The refugees who supply crafts are aged between 20 and 60 and almost 50 of them are women. They come from Rwanda, Burundi, Ethiopia, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Southern Sudan. Their products boast a great variety and include baskets, batiks, cards, clothes, carvings, household items, jewellery, personal items, paintings, toys and dolls. The shop operates as a non-profit entity and is an outlet to both domestic and export markets. By purchasing a quality product from Mikono you help improve the lives of refugees and their families in Nairobi. For more information please download a brochure or visit Mikono.
